The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) is situated in Shimla, India. It is a research institute that was set up by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in the year 1964. It has two fellowship programs - National Fellows and Fellows for a maximum period of two years. The area of academics is mainly Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural & Life Sciences.
The building has historical value as it was designed by Henry Irvin in the year 1884 with full of the latest technology. It was initially the home of Lord Dufferin (Viceroy of India from 1884-88) which continued for all the subsequent Viceroys and Governors-General of India. During the Indian independence movement, some historical decisions have also been taken in the same building. After Independence, the building was used for a summer retreat for the president of India.
