A famous visual contemporary artist Manoj Sarkar was born in 1952 in Kolkata in a middle-class family. He studied in Kolkata as well as in Italy in 1979-80 and was awarded 1st class first in 1974 and 1976 during his five-year diploma from Govt. College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. He was also awarded a scholarship from National Cultural Scholarship in Painting from the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India and Italian Govt. in Painting during his study.
Since 1982 he is associated with and has served in seven major universities of the country with various accredited positions including chairman of Ph.D. A committee in Visual Arts, University of Calcutta.
He has exhibited his paintings in more than a hundred exhibitions all over the country and abroad. His paintings are part of the collections of major reputed art galleries and organizations in India and abroad.
