Raosaheb Gurav: A Legendary Artist
Raosaheb Gurav, a distinguished artist from the small village of Shirol in Kolhapur district, embodies the limitless potential of human creativity. His journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim demonstrates that with vision and perseverance, extraordinary heights can be achieved.
Graduating with a Fine Arts diploma from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune, in 1970, Raosaheb Gurav embarked on a prolific career. He served as an Art Master and later became the Principal of the same institution, retiring after 40 years of dedicated service.
Raised in harmony with nature, Gurav's watercolour paintings vividly reflect his unblemished perspective on the natural world. His landscape and human life portrayals resonate with the pure melodies of nature, evident in his celebrated 'Dhangar' series. These works, highlighting the lives of shepherds, have garnered global recognition, including the selection of one piece as the cover image for Khushwant Singh’s book Delhi, published by a French publisher. Additionally, a painting from this series was showcased in the prestigious Lalit Kala Academy's Annual Exhibition in New Delhi.
The 'Dhangar' series reveals the deep connection between Gurav and his subjects, capturing the essence of their lives, sensitivity, and resilience. His artwork offers a serene escape for urban art enthusiasts seeking the untouched beauty of nature. Beyond traditional watercolours, Gurav's abstract oil paintings further showcase his mastery in delicate colour combinations and integrated compositions.
Since 1968, Gurav has actively participated in numerous significant group exhibitions across India and internationally. His work has been displayed in renowned venues such as the Lalit Kala Art Gallery in New Delhi, Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, and Bal Gandharv Art Gallery in Pune, among others. He has also been a notable presence at various state and national art events, including the National Kala Mela.
Gurav's contributions to the art world have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Maharashtra State Award for Best Artist and Art Teacher in 2001. He has also won first prizes for watercolour landscapes and pencil sketching, and received the Kalidas Award in Ujjain in 1987, along with the TIAS Award for watercolour landscape in the same year. The Bombay Art Society honoured him with a lifetime membership.
His artwork is represented in numerous collections both in India and abroad, including the USA, France, England, Africa, and Japan. Despite his success, Gurav remains committed to supporting emerging artists from rural backgrounds. He has established a permanent studio and residence near Pune to provide a nurturing environment for young artists to develop their craft.
Raosaheb Gurav’s legacy is not just in his art, but in his dedication to uplifting others in the art community, embodying the true spirit of a visionary artist.
