Artist's Statement:
I am a freelance artist based in Kolkata. I was born in 1990 in a village in the Nadia district of West Bengal. I earned my Bachelor’s in Painting from the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta (2011-2014), one of India’s oldest and most prestigious art institutions.
From an early age, I was inspired by the vibrant beauty and spirituality of rural Bengal, which has deeply influenced my artistic journey. Over time, I developed a semi-realistic technique, focusing on texture and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow. I feel comfortable exploring all subjects, blending my personal experiences with the richness of Indian culture and history.
Artistic Philosophy
For me, the true essence of an artist lies in the awareness of their consciousness—an ability to express thoughts, both conscious and subconscious, through their work. I don’t limit my art to a specific cultural classification, as I believe that Indian idealism can be conveyed through both Eastern and Western artistic approaches.
Growing up surrounded by nature and animals, I find that my work is often a reflection of who I am. Indian culture, particularly its spiritual and philosophical traditions, has had a profound influence on me. I am drawn to themes such as the worship of Vishnu (Baishnab Tattwa), the spirituality of the Bauls (minstrels), and the recurring presence of deities like Ganesha, Krishna, and Buddha in my paintings.
While I draw deeply from Indian traditions, I also acknowledge the complex realities of contemporary life—its fluctuations, struggles, and social dynamics. My artwork often blends these influences, attempting to harmonize the male and female forms with nature, animals, and birds, creating a fusion of realistic and symbolic expression. I am also captivated by the changing beauty of the Ganga ghats, capturing their glory at various times of the day and from different angles. The Ganges, along with figures such as the Shadhu (saints) and boats, often feature prominently in my work.
Aesthetic and Technique
I strive for simplicity and clarity in my work, avoiding unnecessary complexity that might distract from its aesthetic impact. I believe that art should engage the viewer emotionally and intellectually, without overwhelming them. My works focus on balancing realism with spiritual and philosophical themes, and I take great care to maintain an aesthetic sensibility that invites reflection.
Recognition and Exhibitions
My works have been exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions in Kolkata, New Delhi, Dubai, Bangalore, and Mumbai. I was honored to receive the Radhacharan Bagchi Award for Best Watercolour Painting in 2011-2012.
Ultimately, I leave the judgment of my work to the future. Art is a living entity, and its meaning evolves, much like the world around us. I continue to explore, create, and share my vision, trusting that my work will find its place in the hearts and minds of those who experience it.
