Vijaylaxmi Deepak Mer is a senior artist; a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (1985), a wife, a mother of two, an avid practitioner and advocate of Yoga, a believer of homemade remedies to cure any illness, a master craftsman, a loving and very outgoing neighbor and above all, a person with a passion and determination to pursue what she desires with conviction. But there is a lot more to her than these adjectives and identities. A thoughtful mind and an ever-curious attitude – she loves to experiment with her craft – trying new ideas and giving shape to her wanderlust through new materials and painting techniques.
Her previous works have been featured in newspapers, magazines, and news channels and have been centered around celebrating femininity – the female figure, the quintessential feminine nature that each one of possesses even though we may not be aware of its existence within us, the nurture, the longing, the wait, the daydreaming, the mind-wandering & wondering, and the lust for life.
Her love for everything art and beauty cemented itself when she first met her friend, husband and guru in college – Late Mr. Deepak Mer - where they became lovers first and ultimately, life partners. Starting a new life with very humble beginnings, she and Deepak, embarked on a wonderful, eventful, and happy adventure. Together they dove deep into the world of art in their 40s after their children were settled in their careers, and put up numerous exhibits all over India, also realizing their love for travel whenever they got the chance. They are both renowned and celebrated both as an “artist couple” as well as individuals in their own right - for their own unique style and aesthetic of painting. Deepak, sadly, passed away in May this year and since then, life has been all about living and creating art for him with his trademark dedication and passion.
Her latest exhibit, A flight of Fantasy – is an ode to daydreaming. She has attempted to give shape and form to the worlds her mind created while lost in wonderlands. The exhibit, in fact, falls on its 33rd Wedding anniversary and is touted to be emotional, momentous, and extremely special. It will be a tribute to their life together, the good times, and a promise to live life fully, by remaining true to a quote Deepak often said “The show must go on”.
Artist Statement:
I believe we need fantasies to escape from reality from time to time. My work with builders and architects early in my career was a heavy influence on my style. I use mixed media and play with textures by using unconventional materials such as jute, sheet metal, etc.
It adds more depth to my art and helps me transcend the painting beyond its visual appeal. The motive is to make you wander into parts of your mind you didn’t know existed. I hope that through my painting, you get to spend some time there.
