Mithila Painting or Madhubani Painting is the most ancient traditional art in India. It is said that it was first drawn on the wall during the marriage of Lord Shri Ram with Goddess Sita in Mithila, which is the birthplace of Sita. That is why it is called Mithila Traditional Art. But the artists who first drew this painting were from the Madhubani (Bihar) district of Mithila. Therefore it is called Madhubani Painting.
This painting is showing a very traditional custom in Mithila-Bihar. This is a ‘Doli’ scene. In earlier days, after a marriage of a girl, she is generally being used to carrying in a wooden cart from her home to her Sasural (her husband’s home). Even today in Mithila, Dulhan (a newly-married girl) goes to Sasural in Doli (Palaki). The Doli is carried by two men on their shoulders followed by Dulha (Bridegroom) and his relatives. It is said that Goddess Sita came to Ayodhya, which is the birthplace of Lord Shri Ram, to her Sasural on Doli according to the custom. Mithila is a place full of traditional customs where we can find a traditional culture of our ancient India.
